RSPCA Nottingham Notts Branch History

There has been an RSPCA in Nottingham since 1870 and the Nottingham and Notts Branch has been in existence since 1885, that makes us 120 years old and we´re more active than ever!

We are an ENTIRELY self financing Branch of the RSPCA. This means we have to raise money here in Nottingham to keep the Branch running and more importantly to help LOCAL animals. We receive no government aid, no funding from RSPCA HQ, no lottery money... we rely entirely on the kindness and generosity of the public.

ANIMALS ADOPTED

Mr Edward
This is Mr Edward, Eddie to his friends and he is an ADORABLE OAP (Old Age Puss) and came to us in a ragtag state, he was knotted, had filthy ears and just needed someone to care for him. Eddie's (and our) prayers were answered when Marilyn, Eddies now owner, came forward expressing the wish to adopt an older cat. Marilyn is of a rare breed as most people want to adopt an animal under 5 years and seeing as Eddie is 12 years + we worried he wouldn't find a home. But these photo's just go to show the pleasure and joy and OAP can bring! Marilyn, thank you for giving this beautiful cat a chance and Eddie...we love you!

The Branch moved to our current premises, 137 Radford Road, in Oct 1974 from the home of the Branch Secretary the late Jane Symons. Jane, a focused and passionate fundraiser was responsible for laying the foundations of the facilities that now exist. The Branch was left a substantial legacy in 1981 by Sarah Raynor, this enabled us to buy the adjoining property and create the animal welfare centre. It is amazing that at one point not only did we care for cats and small animals but also dogs, goats and even a racoon, not something we have ever seen since!

Many changes have occurred over the years. The centre was in the midst of the inner city riots of the late 1970´s/80´s, looked on at the subsequent demolition of Hyson Green flats and more recently watched as the NET tram system was introduced outside our premises.

The RSPCA Nottingham and Notts Branch has seen a lot over the years on Radford Road but our aim has never changed, to help as many of Nottingham´s stray, abandoned and unwanted animals as possible.

Branch Now

The Nottingham and Notts Branch has grown from that initial move over 30 years ago, now occupying 2 three storey buildings and helping more animals than ever.

The shop at Radford Road sells a variety of items including clothes, pet food, household goods and unwanted gifts. We also have a second shop on the High Street at Hucknall and both shops are grateful for any unwanted items you can donate for us to sell. Due to H&S regulations second hand electrical goods cannot be accepted.

The Office deals with over 13,000 telephone calls a year, processes hundreds of neutering applications for pets and offers advice and financial assistance to members of the public. One of the greatest demands on the Branch is to provide funds to care for sick, injured and stray animals who have no-one else to help them.

The Cattery and small animal unit re-home over 200 cats and kittens a year and 50 + miscellaneous rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, budgies and umpteen more small creatures. For further information on adoption, please click here ADOPTING.

We are a busy Branch who not only re-home animals and assist financially with their welfare but also support our hard working local Inspectorate. We are proud to still be providing essential help to animals here, in Nottingham city centre, 120 years after the Branch was founded.
